Looks like the tests failed because Travis couldn't get hold of python 2.6 (not the code). Perhaps add 3.4 and 3.7 into the |

These changes allow tests to pass on python 3.7 (using explicit relative imports, byte strings). I haven't checked whether these are compatible with previous versions.
